The methodology(-ies) used to identify endangered and vulnerable species and/or environmentally sensitive areas and any ongoing assessment and monitoring mechanisms:

In 2009 the University conducted an Ecological Assessment in preparation for Master Planning. The report identified 126 acres of interior forest habitat important to breeding neotropical migratory birds.

A brief description of identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:

Interior Forest was defined as having a buffer of at least 100 feet from any human disturbance, and a tree diversity typical of the Piedmont region. Comparisons were made with a large regional park 2 miles from campus that has a longer data set demonstrating habitat value for migrating neotropical birds.

A brief description of plans or programs in place to protect or positively affect identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:

In campus master plans for landscape management, the interior forest areas and buffers are designated as Natural Landscapes.
