A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:

The Council on University Community was given the charge of leading diversity efforts at UNC Charlotte, and advising the Chancellor of means to create and sustain an inclusive environment that values the presence of people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas. The Council spearheads initiatives that promote deeper understanding of diversity issues and foster a sense of community among faculty, students, and staff. Highlights include: Faculty Recruitment Workshops to help faculty search committees use best practices to conduct fair, inclusive, and effective searches; More than 40 workshops for students offered through the Multicultural Resource Center, Religious and Spiritual Life, and the Center for Leadership Development that include a diversity component;
The Multicultural Student Council (MSC) is a group of UNC Charlotte students who serve as proponents of diversity on campus and as ambassadors of the Multicultural Resource Center. All students can apply to be members of the council, and approximately 10 students are chosen for the academic year.

A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

Safe Zone Allies Training develops informed campus partners who have committed time and energy through organized training to learn more about individuals that may identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning or may be unsure of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Safe Zone Symbol (above) is a visible symbol of support and an affirmation of commitment by that individual to fight homophobia and heterosexism at UNC Charlotte. A Safe Zone 2.0 program was designed to engage existing Safe Zone Allies in conversations that will deepen their knowledge about Queer issues on campus and around the country. The Friendly Peer Training Program is specifically designed for undergraduate students and provides basic information about the Queer community. For Students only, the Office of International Programs offers the International Enrichment Seminar (UCOL 1200). The three-credit course is designed to provide students with an overview of internationally-related resources and programs at the University and in the city, while exploring foundations of global perspectives and intercultural awareness.
