Sustainability Ambassadors are passionate volunteers that promote sustainability on campus by periodically collaborating on sustainability campaigns as well as engaging peers in discussions around sustainability. Sustainability Ambassadors may be asked to collaborate with the Sustainability Coordinator, and/ or the EcoTeam on various campus events that raise awareness about sustainability. Sustainability Ambassadors have been involved in promoting National Sweater Day, a campaign to encourage people to turn down their heat at home.

Sustainability Ambassadors can apply online. Students that apply must be:
-Passionate about the environment and sustainability
-Looking to get involved further as part of the York University community’s continued efforts
-Excellent communication and listening skills
-Positive, professional, and able to build consensus
-Committed to social responsibility and inclusivity
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):
Sustainability Ambassador must attend a mandatory orientation with the Sustainability Coordinator before they are able to act as a Sustainability Ambassador. Sustainability Ambassadors will be familiarized with York’s sustainability policy, goals, and current practices and campaigns.
A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (1st program):
Financial support for supplies or resources needed for various events is provided. As well, the sustainability coordinator provides assistance and resources for the group.

The Eco Team is comprised of 114 student volunteers. They encourage fellow York University students to engage in sustainability through events and campaigns.
Main activities for the Eco Team:
• Spread awareness about sustainability to fellow students.
• Advocate for change and taking action..
• Attend regular meetings for planning and promotion of sustainability.
• Assist with planning and implementing sustainability events.

The Eco Team can be joined by any student that wishes to volunteer.

Eco Team members will be educated at meetings to fully understand the sustainability landscape at York. This is to ensure that when they engage in peer-to-peer education they have the most current information. The Sustainability Coordinator leads the Eco Team.

The Red Zone Sustainability Assistants are located in Vari Hall, which is one of the University’s busiest buildings. For 5-10 hours per week, the Sustainability Assistants are available to educate students on the many sustainability initiatives happening at York and beyond. They also have useful information on sustainable practices and environmentally friendly tips for at home and throughout the day. They use quizzes and prizes to engage students in discussions about sustainability. The most recent addition to the Red Zone’s Sustainability Assistants is a Spin-to-win prize wheel, where students must spin the wheel and answer a sustainability question on that topic to win a re-usable water bottle.

Two Sustainability Assistants are hired each year. They go through a standard hiring process with interviews. Candidates have a passion for sustainability and community engagement.

The Sustainability Coordinator trains the Sustainability Assistants for their peer to peer activities at the Red Zone.

The Sustainability Assistants are paid as part of the work/study program at York. As well, however financial support for supplies or resources needed for various events is provided.
