All incoming freshman are required to take English 101 which has a sustainability component. In addition to this 24% of our university core curriculum contains a sustainability component. Of the 953 graduate students that attended SIU in 2011 at least 50 were enrolled in a program with a sustainability learning outcome, i.e. Geography, Environmental Resources, Advanced Energy and Fuel Management, Forestry, Horticulture, etc.

English 101 assigns a "common reader" every year. This year the text was, Water by David Feldman. "Water is our planet’s most precious resource. It is required by every living thing, yet a huge proportion of the world’s population struggles to access clean water daily."
