UCC was the first university in the world to be awarded ISO50001 accreditation for energy management and was re-accredited in 2017. The principles of the ISO50001 Energy Management System are -
- University Management Commitment
- Energy Planning / reviews
- Design of new buildings and refurbishments
- Procurement of energy services, products, equipment and energy
- Monitoring, measurement and Analysis

As part of ISO50001, engagement and training of staff working in significant energy using buildings is undertaken. The Buildings and Estates office undertake upgrades of older buildings and ensure the incorporation of energy efficient systems in new buildings. Behavioural change campaigns to improve energy conservation among staff and students are also undertaken. This programme has helped achieve our national energy efficiency targets under the government's reporting scheme.
