FIE's sustainability literacy assessment is a 'Sustainability Film and Reflection and Research paper', which is an assessment included in every FIE British Life Key Course, worth 15% of the mark for the course. Students are required to watch FIE's Sustainability Film 'Re-Imagining Sustainability: Creating Our Future' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxBGB8mlvqk&feature=youtu.be) and the assessment prompt is as follows:

At FIE, we are dedicated to being actively engaged with and aware of our environmental impact and responsibilities. As such, we are committed to a sustainable future, to ethical consumption, and to creating social, environmental, and economic well-being in our immediate and global community. The theme of Sustainability in the UK is addressed via a Documentary Film.

Select any THREE points raised during the film that caught your attention, explaining why this was the case for each one and articulating your personal response. You must cite research to back up your opinions. It might help you to consider if a point raised stood out because it gave you a new piece of information, or a fresh insight, or even has made you consider changing an aspect of your behaviour in future, or you disagree.

A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

FIE's sustainability literacy assessment was initially a 'Sustainability Lecture and Reflection and Research paper' assessment. FIE's first sustainability lecture was in 2010, and the lectures, given by a variety of external speakers and FIE faculty, took place every semester until 2016 when FIE produced it's sustainability film. The film has now replaced the lecture as the basis for assessment.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

Students who study on an FIE quarter, semester or summer programme must complete the assessment as part of their British Life Key Course. In 2016 this was 67% of students.

The film viewing and assessment are administered and graded by the student's 'British Life Key Course' faculty member.

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s), including a description of any measurable changes over time:

As the assessment forms a part of students' British Life Key Courses, results are determined through the assessment grading process.

Over time, FIE has introduced changes to the speakers, and then the format of the lecture/film in order to increase student and faculty engagement with the assessment.

Student and faculty response to the assessment improved once it was changed from a mandatory sustainability lecture, which students were required to attend out of class time, to a sustainability film that could be watched at a more convenient time within, or outside of class, and could be more easily reviewed.
