All FIE students are sent pre-departure information and are required to attend orientation upon arrival. (Please see attachment of recent schedule sent to Spring 2017 students, that clearly states mandatory sessions.) As we are a short-program study abroad provider, our orientation is brief, running over the course of two days (as opposed to a week-long event which is more appropriate for larger universities). Our sustainability values and campaigns are mentioned/promoted during orientation. Students are informed on how they may join sustainability activities on campus. Their orientation pack comes in a reusable canvas shopper that has the familiar carbon green foot printed on it, reminding them of FIE's commitment to the environment.
Students are encouraged to attend a walking tour of the local area, where they are shown grocery stores. During orientation they can participate in a 'how much does it cost' quiz that shows students a possible, healthy grocery shop and asks students to 'guess' the amount of the healthy eating weekly shop.
At their welcome reception they are informed of FIE's charity, the Marol Academy, a school that helps to empower and educate female students in South Sudan and incorporates sustainability in its school planning. FIE also encourages students to participate in FIE fundraising activities for the Marol Academy.
