Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability? :
Yes

A brief description of the student research program, including the incentives provided and any positive outcomes during the previous three years:

The Center for Peace and Global Citizenship is a nexus for social responsibility, civic engagement, and global peace work. CPGC funds domestic and international student research throughout the academic year, including fall, winter, and spring break. Strong preference is given to projects relating to one’s senior thesis research and/or major.

Illustrative outcome: a geology major and environmental studies minor traveled to Southeast Arizona on a CPGC grant to analyze the social and environmental impact of a copper mine project involving a private mining company, the federal government, the Apache nation, and local activists. This research contributed to her senior thesis in geology, which won departmental honors.

Does the institution have a program to encourage faculty from multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability topics?:
Yes

A brief description of the faculty research program, including the incentives provided and any positive outcomes during the previous three years:

The CPGC (see above) supports Haverford faculty members in their efforts to integrate global and local issues into their teaching, research and mentoring. This might take the form of attendance at off-campus conferences, hosting on-campus events, organizing service learning projects in conjunction with students, and the inclusion of elements of social justice into courses.

Illustrative outcome: Two students and faculty member Joshua Moses spent
the summer in Kotzebue, Alaska. Kotzebue, whose population is 85% Native Alaskan,
is located 30 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Research included work with local high school and college students on topics ranging from leadership, to local politics, to cultural heritage, and focused on the needs of the community.

Has the institution published written policies and procedures that give positive recognition to interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and/or tenure decisions?:
No

Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning?:

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research, including any positive outcomes during the previous three years:

The Haverford Library offers an Environmental Studies Research guide that includes field-wide resources as well as course-level guides and knowledgeable librarians across the Tri-College Consortium: http://guides.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/environmental-studies
