Office of Sustainability
The University of Calgary SustainabilityON website serves as a comprehensive and up-to-date source of campus sustainability initiatives in Planning and Administration, Campus Operations, Curriculum, Research, and Student Leadership. It also provides resources to students on how they can get involved in campus sustainability, and includes interactive social media options (i.e. Twitter), active media (i.e. videos), and cross-institutional perspectives.
SustainabilityON newsletter - a monthly e-newsletter that provides links to campus sustainability initiatives, news, tips, opportunities for involvement, and more.
The Students' Union hosts the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, which highlights student research in sustainability. The Office of Sustainability provides two $1000 awards. The award winner's project information is published on the website.
Buildings under construction, all of which are targeting LEED certification, will incorporate signage that highlights the green features of the building.
Alternate modes of transportation and alternatives to travel are offered at www.ucalgary.ca/sustainability/transportation and are covered in training in the SustainabilityON Coordinators program
The Gauntlet is the largest student newspaper on campus which is issued weekly. It often covers sustainability related stories however there isn't a regular column or reporter assigned to these stories like there is for the UToday, Buzz and Umagazine mentioned below.
UToday - daily e-newsletter going out to all faculty and staff has a weekly Green Scene section.
The Residence Buzz - weekly Green Scene stories from the UToday are shared in the Buzz which is also a weely newsletter sent out to residence students only.
Umagazine - published 3 times per year. Goes out to 110,000 alumni, students, donors, civic leaders and community members. Each issue features a sustainability-related story.
Signage promoting action at points of decision making e.g. "shut the sash", "lights Off", "Take the Stairs", "Bring a Mug", etc.
UThisWeek – an institutionally-led, weekly publication sent to all students on campus. Many sustainability stories and event notices appear in this publication
Green Pocket Guides – a small pamphlet containing actions students can take to integrate sustainability into their lives. These pamphlets are passed out at events & booths.
Videos – Working with a video development agency to develop a suite of videos targeted at the student population. Videos will communicate campus sustainability initiatives in a humours ways and encourages students to participate in behavioral changes by promoting all the perks of engaging in sustainable behaviors and all the downsides and inconveniences of engaging in unsustainable behaviors.
