A brief description of the program:

This STARS credit recognizes institutions that provide financial incentives for not parking. It is predicated on the notion that parking is often free on campus and therefore an appropriate financial incentive for people to reduce their use of the campus parking is to pay them not to park. The intent of this credit can similarly be achieved by financial deterrents for parking.

Instead of giving money to people who do not drive and park on campus, the University of Calgary charges for the use of parking spaces and reinvests that income in ways that benefit the campus community. Employees or students who chooses not to purchase parking can avoid this cost thus a reward for alternate commuting choices. The TDM Encyclopedia of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute recognizes both parking pricing and parking cash out in their list of financial incentives to encourage alternative commute modes.

As such the University of Calgary believes the intent of this credit has been met.
