A brief description or a copy of the institution’s policy regarding interdisciplinary research:

Interdisciplinarity has been confirmed as one of the University of Calgary’s seven academic priorities in our 2012 Academic Plan, the results of which are already underway. Key strategies for enabling interdisciplinary research are:
• Recognize and reward work to create interdisciplinary academic programs and research
• Promote interdisciplinary academic programs and research
• Remove/reduce barriers between Faculties and Units that discourage collaborative work
• Enhance research infrastructure that can be used in a collaborative fashion
The University of Calgary is home to research institutes, centres, and groups that facilitate interdisciplinary research across a range of faculties. One example is the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Economy which coordinates problem-focused, interdisciplinary research to inform policy and investment decisions regarding the environmental challenges of energy production and use and funds multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research at the U of Calgary focused on finding cost-effective solutions to the environmental challenges of energy production and use. Similarly the Institute for Public Health focuses on population health and health services research with researchers from six different faculties on campus. For a list of other interdisciplinary research institutes and centres focusing on sustainability visit http://www.ucalgary.ca/sustainability/institutions
In addition a number of faculties have faculty-specific guidelines that encourage interdisciplinarity and include it as a consideration in evaluating faculty contributions:
• Communication & Culture
• Education
• Environmental Design
• Fine Arts
• Social Sciences
• Kinesiology
• Medicine
• Nursing
