A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:

Each year the Students’ Union hosts the Undergraduate Research Symposium which showcases undergraduate research. For four years now $1000 awards have been given to the projects that best address environmental and social sustainability. Those recipients are recognized symposium gala and are again recognized at the at our annual SustainabilityON Awards, where we recognize faculty, staff and students who are advancing sustainability.

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:

"Sustainability has been confirmed as one of the University of Calgary's core values as outlined in Eyes High, our institution's strategic vision, and has been further confirmed as one of 7 academic priorities in our 2012 Academic Plan, the results of which are already underway.
Our 2012 Strategic Research plan identifies 6 key research themes that are currently areas of excellence and that will be supported going forward:
• Brain and Mental Health
• Human Dynamics in a Changing World: Smart and Secure Cities, Societies, and Cultures
• New Earth-Space Technologies
• Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering
• Infections, Inflammation and Chronic Diseases in the Changing Environment
• Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow
The University of Calgary is also home to a number of research institutes and centres that focus on sustainability. These institutes provide any number of a range of supports including organizing interdisciplinary teams, offering training, coordinating funding, and hosting forums, symposia, etc.
One example is the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Economy (ISEEE) which coordinates problem-focused, interdisciplinary research to inform policy and investment decisions regarding the environmental challenges of energy production and use. ISEEE funds multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research at the U of Calgary focused on finding cost-effective solutions to the environmental challenges of energy production and use.
