The Office of Sustainability established the Sustainability Stewardship Working Group (SSWG) to build a culture of participation across campus and ensure cross fertilization of ideas and information. Each portfolio under the SSWG is undertaken by students, faculty, and staff. The membership of each portfolio is flexible and adjusts according to the projects being developed.

The Board of Governors also has established the Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability subcommittee which advises the Board and makes recommendations on environment, health, safety and sustainability with respect to university policy and strategic direction.

In 2013 the Academic Committee for Sustainability was launched, undertaking discussions broadly within the academic community about how and where education for sustainability and sustainability literacy should be further developed.

The primary purpose of the Office of Sustainability is to enhance the understanding of sustainability in the context of research, teaching and community service , to integrate sustainability broadly into campus operations, and to build participation across the University in sustainability stewardship. The Office of Sustainability supports the University of Calgary in its efforts towards becoming a North American model for sustainability in higher education.

A brief description of the sustainability coordinator’s position:

The primary purpose of the Chief Sustainability Officer is to be both a visionary leader and an organizational strategist to enhance the understanding of sustainability in the context of research, teaching and community service, to integrate sustainability broadly into campus operations, and to build participation across the University in sustainability stewardship. This position reports to both the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), and the Vice-President (Facilities Management and Development).
