A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:

In 2023, we retained the services of a Centre de gestion des déplacements (CGD), an NPO mandated by the Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to make a complete diagnosis and analysis of how the INRS community gets around, and then to propose solutions.

The travel habits survey was sent to the INRS community on October 10, 2023 and people had until October 27 to answer. There was a prize draw to attract respondents.

The survey was completed by 248 students. Overall, we collected 612 responses from both students and employees; of those, 2 forms were not completely filled out and could not be counted in this question. The a margin of error of the survey is 3,03%.

For the question about the percentage of students using more sustainable commuting options, the CGD added up the number of students who said their primary method of transportation during either season was walking, cycling, carpooling, public transportation, motorcycles/scooters, zero-emissions vehicle or remote working (total of 218, out of 249 students).

Because we live in a Nordic climate, travel habits were separated between Winter habits and Summer habits in our survey questions, but they were merged (average) for the commute modal split.
