Does the institution hold major events related to sustainability, such as conferences, speaker series, or symposia, that have students as the intended audience?:
Yes

A brief description of the event(s):

JMU hosts several events:

1. Trash Sort: Twice a year (once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester), a group of health sciences students sorts through trash collected from campus buildings. The sort is done in a common public area, and the resulting items are displayed in a clear container so campus stakeholders can see how much material is being incorrectly thrown away instead of recycled. A campus news release is regularly created, and local media coverage often occurs.

2. JMU Challenge: Annually a student challenge (e.g., "JMU Challenge 2012") is held to further students' environmental stewardship literacy and problem solving. Details vary from year to year (for example, the format of submissions has included videos or grant proposals, incentives for participating have included prizes or funding for implementation, and the solutions have been applied to sites on campus and off campus).

3. JMU hosts at least one "major event" on sustainability annually open to the campus and community. For the 2012-2013 academic year, two special programs were offered. A Sustainability Exhibit and talk (“Hungry Planet: What the World Eats”) was held, and a JMuse Café series provided a forum for discussion on relevant sustainability topics.
