A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:

It is the intent of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Facilities Services that all buildings on campus are operated and maintained in such a way that the health of the building occupants and the environment are protected. In doing this Facilities Services takes into account sustainable operations and maintenance with a particular interest on the impacts to the surrounding sites, energy consumption, usage of environmentally preferable materials, indoor environmental quality, and water consumption.

Where practical, Facilities Services will adopt and implement practices that are designed to address sustainability in all areas of operations and maintenance. The practicality of these practices may be determined from an in-house and informal cost/benefit analysis for individual locations on campus.

The following non-comprehensive list details several practices that have already been implemented:

Sustainable Sites
• Supply alternative commuting transportation
• Protect and restore open habitat after site development
• Control storm-water quantity

Water Efficiency
• Meet and/or exceed indoor plumbing fixture and fitting minimum efficiencies

Energy & Atmosphere
• Optimize energy efficiency performance
• Utilize Building Automation Systems
• Utilize System Level Metering
• Emissions reduction reporting

Materials & Resources
• Sustainable purchasing with regards to ongoing consumables, electric-powered equipment, etc.
• Solid waste management

Indoor Environmental Quality
• Indoor air quality management
• Thermal comfort monitoring
• Effective use of daylight and views

This list may change as sustainable technology advances.
