Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

The Division of Hazardous Materials at Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management maintains a list of surplus chemicals which are stored at the Hazardous Materials Facility. Individuals can contact Hazmat Supervisor Richard Deck to find out if a needed chemical is on the list.

The Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management department requires those who will be using chemicals to take the UAF Safety Training Power Point: Introduction to Hazardous Waste Managementppt. Part of the training covers what to do before starting a project: Plan ahead, Strive for Waste Minimization and check with EHS&RM for surplus chemicals.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

UAF manages hazardous waste as a large quantity generator which requires EHS&RM to ship RCRA regulated hazardous waste from our facility every 90 days. All hazardous waste and non-regulated waste are removed from UAF by an EPA permitted disposal contractor every 90 days. Our current disposal contractor is Burlington Environmental LLC/PSC Environmental Services. Universal waste will either be removed by PSC or shipped to Total Reclaim Environmental Services/EcoLights Northwest. A brief description of the process is included in the Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management ppt.
