A brief description of the policy:

UC Irvine follows the California Air Resources Board policy that prohibits idling for more than five consecutive minutes. This rule applies to UC Irvine’s fleet of buses, shuttles, and fleet vehicles. UC Irvine also actively enforces a no-idling policy for all vehicles near Aldrich Hall—a popular loading area.

Additionally, UCI has implemented “zone parking” wherein a student commuter permit holder is allowed to park in a limited number of localized parking lots or structures in the same area. This prevents the large numbers of student drivers from circling the most high-demand parking areas for lengthy spans of time thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
