Does the institution use xeriscape landscaping techniques, including the selection of drought tolerant plants?:
Yes

A brief description of the program or practice:

ISU’s xeriscaping is tied to the use of native species that are used on campus. The native species that are used are those that evolved in the Midwest climate to be hardy to heat and drought tolerant to survive the hot dry summers of Iowa and the extreme, cold winters. In addition to plant selection, care is given to locate plants in environments the plant will be most successful. Water is used as required to initially establish new plantings; planting beds are not irrigated, reinforcing the importance of native plant selection.
